Description Information

April 19, 1861, was probably the most important, exciting, and scary day that residents of Churchville, VA, had ever experienced.  Some fifty-two local men were in the St. James Methodist Church yard organizing as a cavalry unit for the brand new Confederate Army.  The village would have been crowded with people, horses, wagons, and buggies but these men, many poorly armed and equipped, were volunteering to go to war.  They were leaving homes, families, businesses and farms.  What did the future hold?  Who would return and who would not?  Certainly, they didn't think the war would last five years, but this book is about those men and their families who answered the call, often retold in their own words, and what life was like in Churchville during the "War Between The States." - from the back cover
